The MMR Competition Intercooler for the N55-powered BMW 435i F32 uses a Tube and Fin construction to minimise pressure drop. This gives maximum power and torque outputs, and substantially reducing charge air temperatures versus the OE cooling setup.
The factory intercooler used on the N55 engines has proved to be unable to cope with the demands of higher power, hard driven cars, showing up as serious power losses during hard driving as air temperatures soar, and long recovery cool-down times needed.
Using a huge Tube and Fine with a stepped core, our Competition Intercooler provides almost double the core volume of the OE unit and a frontal area around 70% greater than OE, too. That's a really significant difference. The stepped core itself uses internal turbulators to improve its cooling performance and the CFD optimised end tanks assist with maintaining the best possible airflow across the core.
We offer two types of Intercooler for the N55 Fx cars. As well as this Competition version, we offer our High Performance unit, which uses Bar and Plate construction.
We recommend this Competition version for the highest performance applications, as the pressure drop is always lower for Tube and Fin construction to ensure the highest possible airflow (and hence power output). It also has the benefit of being lighter weight, but is a little more expensive than our High Performance unit.
Our development focussed on finding the ‘sweet spot’ of maximum IAT cooling versus minimum pressure loss. This has allowed us to achieve increased size without increased lag.
